A transport chair is usually the chair nobody thought about. Twelve-inch wheels, a sling back, and a seat that is fine for the ten minutes from the car park to the appointment and punishing for anything longer.

The Strongback Excursion is an attendant-propelled transport chair with our patented frame-integrated ergonomic backrest built into it. It is made for indoor mobility and short-distance trips, and it is made so that the person in it is still sitting properly at the end of them. Attendant Brakes are standard across the line.

What it feels like to use

The person in the chair sits up. The backrest is shaped into the frame and follows the natural curve of the spine, in a compact transport frame. The difference shows up on the long days: the hospital appointment that runs over, the airport connection, the afternoon at the museum.

It steers in a corridor. Small rear wheels and a compact frame make the Excursion easy to turn in the places transport chairs actually get used. Doorways, lifts, waiting rooms and aisles.

Whoever is pushing can stop it from where they stand. Attendant Brakes are built into both push handles as standard, on every Excursion. On a ramp or a slope, the person pushing applies the parking brake without crouching down at the wheel.

It folds down small. Folded, the M is 25 in long, as short as anything we make, and the reason the Excursion is the chair that goes in the trunk of a small car.

The backrest, in a transport frame

The problem with a typical transport chair is the sling back. It lets the pelvis roll backwards, the head comes forward to compensate, the ribcage closes down, and an hour in the chair becomes an hour of low-grade work.

The Excursion carries the same patented Strongback ergonomic backrest as the rest of the range, shaped and built into the frame rather than strapped on. It is award-winning ergonomic design in a compact, easy-to-steer transport frame.

Rated for users up to 300 lb

The aluminum frame is rated for users up to 300 lb / 136 kg, tested to ISO 7176-15 for static, impact and fatigue loading. Static stability is at least 7 degrees, per ISO 7176-1. The frame carries a 5-year warranty.

It is pushed, not self-propelled

The Excursion has 12 in rear wheels with no hand rims. It is pushed by someone else, and it is not a chair you can propel yourself. The wheels are not quick-release either, which is why the carry weight below includes them: they stay on. If you want to move under your own power, the Strongback Comfort is the chair to look at, and it carries the same backrest.

Made for transfers and tight spaces

The legrests swing away and come off by hand, so nothing sits between the chair and a bed, sofa or car seat during a transfer. The desk-length armrests are shortened at the front, which lets the chair pull right up to a table or a kitchen counter instead of stopping at the edge. Integral clothing guards keep fabric clear of the wheels. Unfolded, the M is 26 in wide and the L is 28 in, so both clear a standard interior doorway.

Carry Weight on the Excursion is the frame with the rear wheels included, because those wheels are not removable, and with legrests and anti-tippers off. Total Weight is the chair as it rolls, with legrests attached, excluding anti-tippers and the shipping box.

The Excursion M weighs 26.2 lb with the rear wheels on, because those wheels do not come off. Frame, wheels and legrests together weigh 28.9 lb, excluding anti-tippers and the shipping box. The gap between those two numbers is small for exactly that reason. We publish both, and we say which is which. Some manufacturers quote only the lightest number they can measure. Always ask what a stated weight includes.

Measure the widest point across your hips and thighs while seated, then add 1 inch (2.5 cm). That is your seat width.

You have 30 days to change your mind. If the chair arrives in perfect condition and simply is not right for you, you have a full 30 days from delivery to return it for a refund. Ask us for a return authorization first, keep the original packaging, and send the chair back unused. Return shipping is at your expense, and a return that reaches our warehouse without an authorization number cannot be refunded.

What is a transport chair and how is it different from a self-propelled wheelchair?

A transport chair is a manual chair with small rear wheels and no hand rims, designed to be pushed by another person. The user cannot propel it themselves because there is nothing to grip and turn. The quickest test is to look for a metal ring on the outside of the rear wheel: if there is one, the chair is self-propelled; if there is not, it is a transport chair. The Strongback Excursion is a transport chair. The Strongback Comfort, Comfort S, Comfort Flip and Heavy Duty are self-propelled wheelchairs.

What makes the Strongback Excursion different from other transport chairs?

Most transport chairs have a flat sling back with nothing for the lumbar region to rest against. Over an afternoon of sitting the pelvis tilts backward and the spine rounds, which is why people come out of them sore and slumped. The Excursion carries the patented Strongback backrest, contoured to support the natural curve of the lower spine and built into the frame rather than strapped on. It is award-winning ergonomic design in a compact, easy-to-steer transport frame.

How much does the Strongback Excursion weigh?

The carry weight is 26.2 lb for the M (18 in seat) and 26.7 lb for the L (20 in seat). That figure includes the rear wheels, because Excursion wheels do not come off. Complete with legrests attached the M is 28.9 lb and the L is 29.3 lb.

Why does the carry weight include the wheels when your other chairs exclude them?

Because on this chair they do not come off. The 12 in transport wheels are not quick-release. Quoting a wheels-off figure for the Excursion would be quoting a weight for something you cannot actually pick up, so we include them and say so.

Does the Strongback Excursion fit in a car?

Folded with everything still attached, the M measures 25 x 14 x 30 in and the L measures 25 x 14 x 32 in. At 25 in long it is as short as anything we make, which is why the Excursion is the chair that goes in the trunk of a small car. Send us your car model and we will check.

Which seat width should I choose, 18 or 20 inches?

Measure the widest point across the hips and thighs of the person who will sit in it, seated. 15 to 17 in takes the M and 17 to 19 in takes the L. Get this right: a seat that is too wide lets the trunk lean, which undoes the back support the chair is there to provide. If the measurement is under 15 in, call us at (757) 349-7790 before ordering and we will help you find the right fit. If you land on the boundary between M and L, go up.

Are the Attendant Brakes an extra?

No. They are standard on every Excursion, built into both push handles. They let whoever is pushing apply the parking brake from where they are standing, which matters on a ramp or a slope. There is no version without them.

What weight capacity does the Strongback Excursion support?

300 lb / 136 kg, tested to ISO 7176-15. Choose a capacity that sits above your weight with margin rather than at it. If you need more, the Strongback Heavy Duty is rated to 375 lb / 170 kg with a 22 in seat, though it is a self-propelled chair rather than a transport chair.

What terrain can the Strongback Excursion handle?

The 12 in wheels handle smooth outdoor surfaces, so pavements, packed paths and light gravel, better than a standard transport chair's smaller wheels. For grass, cobblestones or genuinely uneven ground, a transport chair is not the right tool. For indoor use, corridors, waiting rooms, airports, shops and ramps, the Excursion is in its element.

Should I choose a transport chair or a self-propelled wheelchair for an elderly parent?

It depends on whether they can propel themselves and whether someone will be pushing. If they can still push themselves and want to, a self-propelled wheelchair gives them independence, so look at the Strongback Comfort.
